In 1932, Amelia Earhart (1897-c. 1939) became the first women to fly alone over the Atlantic Ocean, flying from Canada to Northern Ireland. This feat earned her the Distinguished Flying Cross and opened new frontiers for women. A member of the National Woman's Party, Earhart was also a keen supporter of women's right.
