In 1948, Alice Marie Coachman (1923 - 2014) became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Specializing in the high jump, Coachman leapt 5 feet 6 1/2 inches (1,68m) on her first try in the high jump finals. Coachman is recognized for paving the way for African American track stars, and in 2004 she was inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame.
