There were no official laws that protected the rights of pregnant women in the workforce until the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) in 1978, which amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to "prohibit sex discrimination on the basis of pregnancy." In 1993, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) increased employment protections for pregnant women.
