In 1985, social worker Wilma Mankiller (1945-2010) became the first woman to be elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Over her 10 years in the role, Mankiller doubled employment within the tribe, revolutionized it's healthcare system, and promoted better education. She worked hard to improve the public image of Native Americans and was a tireless advocate for women's rights.
